The 55-year-old - a five-time Champions League winner - was appointed technical director in 2019 and oversaw a Milan side that won the 2021-22 Serie A title. Theo Hernandez, Rafael Leao, Fikayo Tomori and Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali all arrived under his watch.

Maldini previously hinted at exploring options outside of Italy - including Saudi Arabia. He said in December: “For my job, the alternatives (in Italy) to Milan are very limited. I could never go to another Italian team.

“Possibly I would only evaluate the offer of a high-level foreign team. I like winning and building. Saudi Arabia could be a stimulating option, who knows.”

His standing within the game and work at AC Milan could tempt a Premier League club to offer him a job. However, NewcastleWorld know Toon chiefs are looking elsewhere despite ambitious reports linking him with the St James’ Park gig.

Crystal Palace supremo Dougie Freedman is now widely regarded as the front-runner to succeed Ashworth, who remains on gardening leave until a compensation packed with Manchester United can be reached. Former Ralf Rangnick protege Johannes Spors, the global director of 777 Group, Everton’s proposed owners, has also been named by various outlets as a potential candidate.
